Trolls are fictional characters appearing in Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore as creatures similar to humans, but very often much larger than them. In this culture, they were presented as very old, malicious and not very intelligent creatures, but also endowed with considerable physical strength. They lived far from human habitats, mainly in caves or in the mountains, and their main occupation was gold and silver mining. As they turned into stone under the influence of sunlight, they only left their habitats at night. Today, Trolls appear in many movies and in the pages of numerous fantasy novels. In the world created by Tolkien in "The Lord of the Rings", they are beings of enormous physical strength, but with almost no intellect, and Morgoth is given for their creator, as a peculiar counterpart of the ents. Trolls will also appear in many other fantasy worlds, including Andrzej Sapkowski's works about The Witcher and Terry Pratchett's "Disc World".
