KwK39 (full marking: 5 cm KwK 39 L / 60 , and the 5 cm Kampfwagenkanone 39 L / 60) is a German 50 mm tank gun from the Second World War. The length of the cannon barrel was 60 calibers, or 300 centimeters. The average rate of fire was, in turn, 10-12 rounds per minute with a very well-trained crew. The presented tank gun was developed on the basis of the 50mm PaK38 anti-tank gun, and the actual development work on it began with the need to fight the German tanks with the KW-1 and T-34 vehicles. From the very beginning, the gun was also designed as an anti-tank weapon, which had a decisive impact on both its ballistic parameters and the ammunition used. This cannon used mainly such missiles as Panzergranate (PzGr.) 39 and PzGr. 40, although the gun could also fire Sprenggranate 38 (Sprgr.38) shells. Although the penetration capacity of shells fired from this gun was better than that of the 5 cm KwK 38 cannon, this cannon became the main armament of only a few versions of the Panzer III (exactly: Ausf. J, L and M), as well as the Sd. Kfz. 234. This fact can be explained by the relatively quick introduction on a larger scale of the much better 75mm KwK40 L / 43 gun.
