The Bordkanone 5 (abbreviated: BK 5) is a German air gun from the Second World War. The weapon entered service in 1943/1944 and remained in service until 1945. About 300 plots of this type were built during the production process. The curb weight of this weapon was 540 kilograms, and the theoretical rate of fire was up to 45 rounds per minute. The Bordkanone 5 cannon was developed by Rheinmetall, and construction work began in 1943. Their goal was to adapt the 50mm KwK cannon from the Panzer III tanks for use in German aviation. The new weapon was to be mounted on heavy, twin-engine fighters, which were intended to counter Allied strategic bombers - especially the B-17s. It was assumed that thanks to the large caliber of the BK 5, it would allow you to fight strategic bombers from a long distance, while reducing your own losses. In addition, the projectile fired from this weapon was to be characterized by considerable kinetic energy. Finally, relatively few plots of this type were built and they were not used on a large scale over the German skies. They were mainly mounted on Me-410 A-1 / U-4 airplanes and - to a lesser extent - on Ju-88 P-4 machines.
